- Soil Type: Hosta ‘Sum and Substance’ thrives in well-draining, rich, organic soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, watering deeply once or twice a week, especially during dry spells.
- Sun Exposure: Plant in partial to full shade, ideally with morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch.
- Spacing: Space each plant 3 to 4 feet apart to allow for mature growth and air circulation.
- General Maintenance: Mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature; remove any dead leaves in early spring.
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth.
- Pest Management: Watch for slugs and snails, and use organic slug bait or hand-pick them when necessary to protect the leaves.
